Paper City Nut Brown Ale

History

Brown ale is a style of beer with a dark amber or brown colour. The term was first used by London brewers in the late 17th century to describe their products, such as mild ale, though the term had a rather different meaning than it does today. 18th-century brown ales were lightly hopped and brewed from 100% brown malt.

Beers termed brown ale include sweet, moderate alcohol beers such as Paper City's Nut Brown Ale. Brown Nut Ales may have evolved as one of the elements of early porters. Originally, the “mildness” may have referred to the fact that this beer was young and did not yet have the moderate sourness that aged batches had.

What to expect:

Pour: Pours a dark brown body with a nice bold and strong strength to it. The head is about an index finger thick, tan color, very good foamy body, with long retention and good lacing around the glass. Most certainly a "nut" brown!

Aroma: Rich and nutty aroma greets the nose, with just a hint of residual sweetness. A bit "toasty" as well.

Smell: Very nice nutty complexity with a bready background. Light notes of chocolate do appear with a faint whiff of fruit. The hops are light and do not disturbed the malt scent. The smell is of roasted malt with a bit of a smokey character.

Taste: Hints of brown sugar and lightly toasted malt greet my tongue. Very subtle and full of flavor. .

Mouth Feel: Mouthfeel is correct for the style with just a hint of lingering toasted malt/brown sugar at the back. Again, the subtlety works in its' favor.

Drinkability: Very nice example of the style. Who needs extreme beer when you can get your nut on? Of course, there are no actual nuts in this but the malt mimics it.
