The Munich Hops Club - Wednesday December 15, 2010

The Munich Hops Club
On Wednesday, December 15th, at 6:00 PM

Featuring:
Paper City Vienna Lager

History:
Vienna lager is a style of lager beer. It was developed by brewer Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. Named after the city in which it originated, a traditional Vienna lager is brewed using a three step decoction boiling process. Munich, Pilsner, Vienna toasted and dextrin malts are used, as well wheat in some cases. Subtle hops, crisp, with residual sweetness.

The Association of Brewers defines the beer class Vienna lager as a reddish brown or copper colored beer with medium body and slight malt sweetness. The malt aroma and flavor may have a toasted character. Hop bitterness should be clean and crisp. Noble-type hop aroma and flavor should be low or mild. As with most lagers, fruitiness due to esters is a defect. Diacetyl, which can impart a butterscotch aroma and flavor, should not be perceptible.

What to expect:
Pour:
Pours crystal clear, reddish-brown coppery amber in color with a big fine pure white head. The head drops slowly and leaves lots of lace as it falls.

Aroma: Aroma is nice. Floral and herbal hops. Hint of butterscotch, white bread and cracker. Faint toasty notes. Big crackling head diminishes in seconds with nothing to show.

Smell: Initially quite weak, mainly spicy hops but over time light caramelized sugar and smokiness come to the nose. Fairly malty with some caramel notes and a herbal touch.

Taste: There is a nice light bitterness and a bit of caramel in there. Toasted malts, slightly spicy with herbal undertones and a grassy finish. Fairly sweet in general. Hops are barely there but do level out the sweetness. The sweetness takes a while to build and then lingers a bit, but is in no way cloying.

Mouth Feel: Mouth feel is great. Nice light body, silky smooth and almost creamy. Just under medium carbonation level.

Drinkability: Drinkability is good. Nice balance, crisp and refreshing. A tasty lager. An easy drinker, you could easily enjoy several of these.
